About Me

Cynthia Post, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist whose private practice is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Dr. Post received her B.A. in Psychology from the University of New Hampshire (1984) and her M.A.1986) and Ph.D. (1990) in  Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology.

Prior to beginning her private practice, Dr. Post had a myriad of clinical experiences including her internship at a residential treatment center for children and adolescents where she led groups, did family therapy and learned play therapy skills.  She went on to complete a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at St. Elizabeth Hospital and the DC Commission for Mental Health Services where she double majored in group and family therapy. After completing her post-doctoral training, she worked in a number of different facilities including a children's mental health center, an outpatient clinic, and a center for victims of child abuse as well as spear heading a group therapy program for children and adolescents in a residential treatment center who had been sexually abused.  These experiences prepared her well for opening her own practice in 1992.

Dr. Post works with adolescents in individual and family therapy and with adults in individual and couples therapy.  A growing area of interest and expertise of hers is in couple's therapy.  Dr. Post is seeing an increasing number of couples in her practice and in 2009 she completed an advanced couples training program.  She continues her couples training by participating in an ongoing supervision group.  Other areas of clinical interest include women's issues and co-parenting.  Another area of developing interest and expertise is her work with step families and with late adolescence and young adults in transition.

Dr. Post completed her dissertation on women who were sexually abused as children, and how this relates to depression in adulthood.  Out of this research has stemmed another area of expertise for her, which is working with both adolescents and adults, who have been abused.  Another related area, is working with trauma victims, such as people who have been victims of crimes, in a therapeutic setting, as well as, serving to help organizations, in a facilitator capacity, debriefing employees, following various traumas experienced while in the work setting.

Dr. Post has provided supervision, consultation, and served as a community liaison to train staff in therapy skills.  From 1994 to 1996, she taught Introduction to Psychology and Abnormal Psychology at Montgomery College.  She has been a member of the American Psychological Association since 1992, the Maryland Psychological Association since 1992, earned entrance into the National Register of Health Services Providers in 1995, and joined the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in 2008.

Other professional focal areas for Dr. Post include her participation on a panel discussion on Oldies 100 about Child Abuse Prevention.  She is currently doing a radio show which runs once every one to two months on 98.7 WMZQ(refer to my links & resources), 99.5 HOT, DC101, BIG 100.3 and 97.1 WASH-FM discussing relevant relationship topics as part of the Maryland Initiative to increase public education.  Furthermore, Dr. Post has been on various talk shows at the time of the sniper incident in 2002, speaking about the reactions of the community and how to help people cope with this trauma.  These shows were broadcast on Cable Television Channel 21, Canadian TV, and the Today Show.
